While Sunbathers Fled Danger, Viral Photo Depicts Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘Full Speed’ In the Direction of the Location.
Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, has always considered the renowned beach as her own backyard. On that particular Sunday evening, she, like many local residents, heard pops reverberating around the suburb.
“We all thought the same, but I thought it was still too bright and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her residence, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces they wore signaled a crisis was unfolding.
While standing on the street, conversing with a duo who had rushed up the incline in their swimwear, she became aware of someone coming up from behind. It was a beach patrol officer, sprinting to Bondi unshod from the nearby Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while holding a life-saving kit.
“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this blur of blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. He was the only one moving in the direction that everyone was trying to flee, carrying that big kit and barefoot … He’s running towards something that certainly every fibre in your being would instruct you to run in the other direction.
“Without a second thought, but just fully maximum effort running.”
A Symbol of Bravery In the Wake of Tragedy
The photo Ching captured of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many instances of heroism in the wake of the violent incident.
Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with other rescuers, law enforcement and ambulance crews attending to dozens of victims.
Local Outpouring and Assistance
Doolan’s account was a single example among several to be shared by the local area, with the lifeguard clubhouse next to the scene of the incident serving as a makeshift medical station. Reports indicate that other team members were also seen responding bravely, including going into the surf to save people who were struggling.
After the attack, statements of gratitude were shared. A social media message shared thanks for the individuals who demonstrated that “goodness will always triumph over evil”.
The team of beach patrol later shared a statement, noting they were “processing what transpired”.
“We are grateful all for your thoughtful messages and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the kindness shown towards our personnel,” the team wrote. “When ready, we will recount our experiences in the belief that it aids those involved.”
Local Government Recognition
Waverley council, the governing body that employs many professional beach safety officers, remarked that the staff performed exceptionally from the second the violence started until late that evening.
“There have been so many moving stories, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is incredible,” stated a mayor.
“Our lifeguards demonstrate altruism every day in keeping our world-famous beaches protected for visitors, but what we observed on that evening should be commended.
“As we grieve and come to terms with the terror of this heinous tragedy, I think it is crucial that we reflect on just how much good we have observed in the presence of such evil.”
