Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
